American Academy of Pediatrics Parent Advisory Group's New Expanded Role

AAP logo

The American Academy of Pediatrics’ (AAP) Board of Directors recently expanded the role of the Parent Advisory Group (PAG)—which started as a pilot initiative in 2007 within the AAP Section on Home Care, under the guidance of Denise Callarman and Dr. Russell Libby, to serve to “encourage patient- and family-centered care through AAP Committees and sections.” The PAG will now be part of the AAP Department of Practice, with Drs. Danielle Laraque and Marilyn Bull as liaisons, and will participate at all levels of the AAP. Marie Abraham, IPFCC’s Senior Policy and Program Specialist, has been a member of the PAG since it was established.

As a result of the Board’s recognition of the PAG as the family engagement entity for the Academy, it asked the PAG to broaden its representation to reflect the range of Academy initiatives and levels. One anticipated addition will be the inclusion of fathers and adolescents, for which the PAG will develop a process for “mentorship.” In addition, a representative of the PAG was invited to attend the January 2015 Board of Directors meeting, which expects to fund PAG activities through 2015, when activities will be reviewed.

At the 2014 AAP National Conference and Exhibition, October 11-14 in San Diego, California, the PAG will host a reception for families and adolescents to network and share information about how youth and families are involved in AAP efforts. If you planning to attend the AAP Conference or live in the San Diego area, and want to attend the reception, please contact Sunnah Kim at skim@aap.org for further information.

The PAG is exploring opportunities and methods for further collaboration between families/youth, consumer organizations, and AAP members and entities—nationally, within states, and at the practice level, and welcomes your ideas. Additionally, the PAG may convene a face-to-face meeting at AAP headquarters during the coming months. If you know of any family members or adolescents who are active in state or national AAP activities, the PAG would like to hear from you. Please contact Sunnah Kim at skim@aap.org.

Partnership ~ Potential for Worldwide Improved Health Outcomes and Reduced Costs

Sept 2014 Heallth Affairs.coverAdvancing Global Health Policy is the topic of the September 2014 issue of Health Affairs. One of the articles, Patient Engagement: Four Case Studies that Highlight the Potential for Improve Health Outcomes and Reduced Costs—authored by Jeremy Laurance, Sarah Henderson, Peter J. Howitt, Mariam Matar, Hanan Al Kuwari, Susan Edgman-Levitan, and Ara Darzi—presents four worldwide patient engagement case studies that demonstrate improved health outcomes, reduced costs, and other positive outcomes.

One of the four case studies featured in this article highlights the work of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC), a hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, to promote mutually beneficial partnerships among providers, patients, and families. BIDMC increased the involvement of patients and family members in improving care, which included setting up patient and family advisory councils. Over three years, BIDMC appointed 100 patient and family advisors (PFAs), many of who sit on hospital committees alongside leadership and staff. PFAs work in partnership with providers to improve efforts to enhance the patient experience of care. BIDMC won the American Hospital Association-McKesson 2013 Quest for Quality Prize, in part as a result of its emphasis on patient and family engagement and partnership. (See article above for more information on this prize.)

The authors state, “closer collaboration on the part of patients, families, health care providers, health care systems, and policy makers at multiple levels” have the potential to “help diverse nations provide more effective and population-appropriate health care with fewer resources.”

The article provides more details about BIDMC as well as descriptions of the other three case studies presented.

New Yorkers for Patient & Family Empowerment Partners with IPFCC in the Better Together: Partnering with Families Campaign

IPFCC welcomes New Yorkers for Patient & Family Empowerment as one of the partners in launching IPFCC’s Better Together: Partnering with Families campaign, which calls on all hospitals to eliminate restrictive visiting policies and welcome families 24 hours a day. IPFCC is committed to changing policies in 1,000 hospitals by 2017.

New Yorkers for Patient & Family Empowerment (also known as “Patient & Family”) is a not-for-profit organization that seeks to empower patients and their loved ones in interacting with the health care system; strengthen public access to information on patient safety; and improve the quality and safety of health care in New York. Patient & Family’s goal is “to focus greater attention on patient safety and to counteract the factors that make it harder for patients and their loved ones to achieve greater safety in health care.”

In 2012, Patient & Family, with help from NYPIRG (New York Public Interest Research Group), conducted a survey of visiting policies in the largest hospitals across New York State, and found wide, inexplicable variations in rules—many of which were surprisingly restrictive. The resulting report, Sick, Scared and Separated from Loved Ones, advocated against restrictive policies. In a follow-up report, Sick, Scared & Separated from Loved Ones II: Progress and Problems in Hospitals Disclosing the Patient’s Right to Choose Who Can Visit, found that nearly one out of five large hospitals in New York State have outdated and incorrect information on their websites concerning the patient’s right, by law, to decide who ca
n visit at the bedside when visitation is restricted for clinical reasons.

2014 Edition
of
Privileged Presence:
Personal Stories of Connections in Health Care

T
PP2e_cover_webhe new 2014 edition of Privileged Presence: Personal Stories of Connections in Health Care, authored by Liz Crocker, Vice President of IPFCC, and Bev Johnson, President and Chief Executive Officer of IPFCC, is now available.

This updated second edition is a collection of more than 65 stories that reflect
health care experiences from the points of view of compassion, communication, collaboration, respect, and dignity...or their absence. This new edition uses real-world experiences recounted by patients and their families, nurses, doctors, and other health care professionals to illustrate what works and what doesn’t, what increases or diminishes an individual's sense of confidence and well-being. Tools for improving care and creating partnerships are included in the book.

Sue Sheridan, Director of Patient Engagement, Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) reported, “As I finished the book, I felt a resolve to be part of improving what can become better and applaud the courage and compassion of those
who dare to embrace the human
ness of healthcare. I hope that the next healthcare worker who delivers care to my children, my parents, or to me has read this book."
