Family Presence During a Pandemic: Guidance for Decision-Making

As we learn more about the COVID-19 pandemic, the serious harms of new restrictions for family presence in hospitals and other care settings are increasingly being recognized. To encourage organizations to “revisit” their policies, IPFCC has developed a free, online resource integrating the core concepts of PFCC and fundamental principles of bioethics into three tools to guide collaborative decision-making in achieving a better balance between benefits and harms – for patients, families, clinicians, and communities. Development of the resource was supported through funding from the New York State Health Foundation.
Resources and Opportunities
Partnerships with Patients and Families During COVID-19

This new IPFCC resource summarizes best practices in partnerships within key areas including telehealth, mental health, family presence, and health equity. Information for the resource was gathered during interviews and conversations in the past year with patient and family advisors and staff leaders in health care settings. Development of the resource was supported through funding from the Lucile Packard Foundation for Children’s Health and the New York State Health Foundation.
Community Partnership for Addressing Systematic Racism and Inequality

A new blog post from Community Catalyst and the Health Care Transformation Task Force discusses how efforts to partner with communities benefit health care organizations dealing with the current crisis by creating opportunities for patients, families, and the community to inform the development of new policies in response to COVID-19. IPFCC's Pam Dardess is a co-author.
OpenNotes Wants You to Be Ready!

OpenNotes, the international movement promoting and studying transparent communication in healthcare, is offering a series of free webinars and office hoursessions with topic experts. As of April 5, all U.S. healthcare systems will be required to share all visit notes with patients in electronic format. This is a great time for health system staff, advisors, and patients and family members to learn more about open notes and how they can be effective in improving care. Many past webinars (including sessions on pediatric notes, mental health notes, palliative care notes) are recorded and available to view on the webinar page of the OpenNotes website. If you want to stay up-to-date on upcoming webinars and registration, please sign up for the OpenNotes newsletter or periodically check the webinar page.
